"Red Hen ... really loves the music and it shows. They play with vigor and panache. They played a perfect mix of original and traditional tunes, instrumentals and vocals. It was great fun to present them."

–Rich Warren, host of Folkstage and Midnight Special

A coustic quartet Red Hen delves into the deeper roots of American traditional music, playing songs and tunes from Appalachian Old-Time and Celtic sources. The group's authenticity is enhanced when mixed with award-winning music and songs written by band members. Boasting distinctive lead voices with great harmonies and hot tunes, Red Hen is acoustic Americana at its best – true roots music.

When Red Hen members met in the mid '80s, they knew that someday they would have a band together. Finally, after playing non-stop for 9 days at the 2006 Clifftop Appalachian Mountain Festival (and winning the prize for Best Non-Traditional Tune), they realized their unique sound, their rich vocals and red-hot tunes were just too much fun. Red Hen was born.

  Jane Rothfield

Jane's award-winning fiddling adds fire and whimsy to the Red Hen sound. She moves easily from driving old time to country tunes and romantic Celtic melodies and doubles on groove banjo. Her clear, true voice adds a plaintive note to Red Hen.

Her classical beginnings included study at Julliard's pilot Suzuki children's program, where she met the founder, Shinchi Suzuki.

As a teen, she slipped her classical mooring and headed for other shores, along the way mastering an inspiring repertoire of American and Celtic traditional tunes, with a strong smattering of old-time and Scottish-rooted pieces as the centerpiece. With decades of collecting tunes, she still has left room in her heart for lots of original compositions in the many traditions of the roots music she loves.

Jane also performs and teaches at Old Songs and Philadelphia Folk Festivals with Groovemama and teaches every summer at Old Songs Fiddle & Strings Camp.

   Linda Schrade

Linda's pure voice and expressive singing go right to the heart, with a power that stops people in their tracks. Whether singing lead or harmony, her voice rises to the top.

With Parents' Council awards for two Gentle Wind children's albums, Linda has recorded with John and Trish Miller, vocalists Sarah Pirtle, Lui Collins, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Linda's tasteful and solid rhythm guitar defines Red Hen's solid groove.

Linda studied at Rochester Institute of Technology, and is the "Queen of Beads," having operated a bead store (Saratoga Beads) in Saratoga Springs since 1994.

   Allan Carr

Born and raised in Aberdeen, Scotland, Allan brings his amazing Celtic guitar, bass playing and powerful voice to the Americana music of Red Hen.

He has a wonderful store of songs from the British Isles and has adapted many to Red Hen's style.

With wife Jane Rothfield, Allan has performed for 30 years, beginning as a duo and in Scottish band Rothfield, Hadden and Carr (with Silly Wizard bassist Martin Hadden) and in NY-based band Atlantic Bridge.

A masterful lyricist as well as an accomplished bass and guitar player, his originals songs and arrangements are essential to Red Hen's eclectic and entertaining repertoire.

   David Kiphuth

L onesome" Dave, a banjo devotee since 1962, is an outstanding bluegrass, and old time-banjo player and singer.

Dave grew up in Connecticut, where he helped found Apple Country with Phil Rosenthal. He's also played with Frank Wakefield, John Rossbach's Chestnut Grove, and The Oldtime Bluegrass Singers, with Dick Bowden, Herb Applin and Lillian Fraker.

His tasty playing is unrivaled for backing up a singer and on blazing tunes. His accompaniments on the banjo and the hybrid banjo-dobro provide a wonderful platform for everything from a slow blues to a frenetic bluegrass tune.

David's high, lonesome voice brings a true mountain flavor to Red Hen Stringband's rich array of vocal textures.
